Silence
Sound is the dissipation of energy. The more sound you make the less optimal your movement will be. If you want to convince yourself of your movement efficiency and mind, body, breath control then listen. A foot landing clumsily and heavily on the floor means lack of control. Listen to the quality of your breath. Use the whole of your body to balance and engage in movement; the more muscles you use the more distributed the effort will be and the more control and power your movement will have. Wire walkers have their poles but we have our arms.

Ba Gua gives the most obvious solutions to these problems. Remember the walk of Yu; use your lower abdominals to move your legs and you’ll realise how much control you can gain. Be silent with your mind, breath and body within the noise of modern life. Recall that to still your mind, the mind must be anchored externally. You therefore move your sight from one point to the next, one target to the next.

The Ba Gua within the Rose Li School is specifically engineered to train and test your movement efficiency. We overuse our vision. Try Ba Gua walking in the dark and you’ll realise how much you allow your balance to rely on your sight. Do it in your living room and see how difficult it is not to bump into the furniture. Swim and be comfortable in the darkness - it’s not your enemy. Try Ba Gua walking up stairs. Try it on different surfaces and heights; go from station platforms to trains or up mountain slopes. If you can, do like the practitioners in the old days: build in your garden a series of steps at different heights and Ba Gua walk on these. See how you need to use your legs and feel how you have to move your centre to get up those steps. Practice and practice more. Practice with insight and continuity is the key – cut one thread and the whole carpet is ruined.
