Tai Chi (Taiji) Chinese Internal Martial Arts (Nei Jia) emphasises being and becoming rather than thinking and doing. Daily practice gives you good health, makes the mind and body strong and strengthens your character. Tai Chi uses precise dynamic methods to strengthen and align the postural muscular system and utilises tracking exercises to ensure that correct joint alignment is maintained. The exertion and relaxation of muscle groups are balanced and in this way strength is built up and redistributed aiming for balance around the joints of the body. Importance is placed on working the whole body, and in particular the pelvic core musculature, continually over an extended period of time. Controlled techniques, emphasising the unity of body, breath and mind, are used to exercise, relax and work the deep musculature associated with breathing. Mind, body and breath are worked in order to obtain control during continual movement and thus repetitive type exercise, which focuses upon single muscle groups, is prevented. Historically, the originators of our system had their martial arts ancestry primarily from Ba Gua and Xing Yi. They then utilised Tai Chi to provide the foundation and 'superstructure' for both Ba Kua and Hsing Yi. The Tai Chi system taught within the School, therefore, has more in common with Ba Kua and Hsing Yi than the Tai Chi of other schools. Within the School, Tai Chi is not taught by repetition of form but rather by considering basic principles. Practice is therefore undertaken with insight. In this way the student learns the harmonisation of form (Hsing), will (Yi) and mind (Hsin) via intelligent practice and interpretation. The student thus learns to teach themselves. This also means that Tai Chi practitioners from other systems can easily assimilate tuition. Tai Chi can be practiced by nearly all ages and all levels of fitness. People experience a wide variety of benefits from Tai Chi practice including stretched and toned muscles, improved posture, better balance and coordination, greater self-awareness and increased well-being. Tai Chi is excellent for de-stressing, strengthening after injury, relief from chronic pain (particularly lower back pain), and post-natal mothers. Classes of Tai Chi are currently available at: Pinapple Studios, Langley Street, Covent Garden Saturday 3-4pm Studio 10. Cost: £10 per class. © Copyright.
